Hi

Some of my customers give me dimensions for string spacing at Nut and Bridge. The way I work out the dimensions for the fingerboard is to draw it out full scale. I just wondered if anyone had a better method.

As a rule of thumb, I like the width at the 12th fret to be equal to that of the pin to pin spacing at the saddle location. This allows for a little more meat on the edge of the finger board as you play above the 12th fret, were the strings are looser and like to slip off the edges.

I'm with Lance on this. Unless the bridge has a wide spacing. Then, sometimes, the neck width at the14th fret is equal to the pin spacing. That's a slight difference, I admit, but wide necks can start to stretch things for some players, and a bit of comfort can go a long way in making it more enjoyable to play.
